Washington Gateway Program

Committed to excellence, Shepherd University not only recognizes but enthusiastically accepts the opportunity to directly and aggressively take advantage of its proximity to Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. Serving as a gateway, Shepherd University provides a series of organized, in-depth, academic, cultural, and career experiences in the political and information Capital of not only our nation but the world. 

Washington Semester:  Interns spend an entire semester working in the metro area, four days a week with one day on campus.  Interns receive staff assistance in finding placements.  Some stipend money may be available to help offset expenses.

Washington Gateway Course:  Gateway courses might include, American Government, Opera, Women's Studies, African Art, Recreational Therapy and more.  Gateway courses spend 20 percent of the class time in the metropolitan area.

The Junior High Washington Gateway Academy:  A residential, pre-college intervention program designed to introduce and motivate West Virginia junior high/middle school students to plan for college and academics.

Saturday Bus Trips:  A number of bus trips are
provided each semester to the metro area.
