Game Plan for Graduation

Visit the Career Development Center (CDC) to discover services available

  • Attend Resume/Cover Letter workshops

  • Complete your resume

  • Complete a basic cover letter (then change letter to personalize it for each position/job opportunity for which you are applying)

  • Schedule an individual appointment with the CDC for resume/cover letter critiques

  • Attend interviewing workshop or view videos on interviewing

  • Obtain complimentary copy of Job Choices magazines

Complete salary research for your occupation
(Including salary range for geographic area(s) of your job search)

Make a list of job-search web sites to search for jobs/post resumes

  • College Central Network – www.collegecentral.com/shepherd
    (View job postings submitted to Shepherd University, post/submit resumes to employers of interest)

  • Civil Service web site

  • State government websites

  • County/city personnel offices websites

  •  Newspapers.com – links to newspapers nationwide

  • Professional organizations’ websites  related to your major/area of interest

Obtain list of employers in geographic area(s) of interest

  • State Employment Security Commission

  • Chambers of Commerce for areas of interest
    (Use these lists to identify potential employers to contact)

Research placement agencies in the area, if this type of service meets your needs

Talk with faculty in your degree program

(Professors are great sources for networking with employers)

Talk with supervisors in internship/co-op experiences

(For networking/employment opportunities both inside/outside the organization)
 

Attend Career Fairs

  • Visit: www.shepherd.edu/jobweb/fair.htm for information on specific fairs

  • Research employers who will be attending prior to the event (visit their websites)

  • Take multiple copies of your resume and reference page

  • Dress professionally

  • Attend other career fairs of interest

Schedule appointments with CDC staff for additional assistance

View videos and obtain handouts on the importance of your first year on the job
