When choosing a class schedule, there are many different factors you must take into consideration.  How many credits should I take? What classes are required?  What is the minimum number of credits that I can schedule? What is the maximum number of credits that I can schedule?

You are considered a full-time student if you enroll in a minimum of 12 credits hours per semester.  Note: You must earn at least 16 credits per semester in order to graduate in four years.  If you choose to schedule less than 12 credit hours per semester, you will be considered a part-time student.

Credit hours refer to the number of academic credits a student will earn upon completion of a class.  This term also refers to the total number of hours spent in each class on a weekly basis.  Science labs and Physical Education classes are exceptions to the total weekly hours attended definition.  Please refer to “Words to Know” for a more specific explanation.

There are certain classes that all students are required to take despite their academic major.  These classes are General Studies Courses.  We strongly suggest that you incorporate these courses into your schedule each semester.  Please refer to page 23 to review the “General Studies Requirements”.

You should consider all of these factors when scheduling classes.  Also keep in mind necessary travel time, breaks, time for lunch, and study time.

Each class is assigned the following information.  Be aware of all of this information when scheduling.

CRN Number  Specific Class Identification Number
Subject The Department the class falls under
CRS The level of the class (Example 101, 201)
Title The specific class title
Credits Number of credit hours assigned to the class
Days What days the class meets
Time When the class meets
Bldg/Rm. The building and room the class meets
Instructor The class instructor
Comments/Prerequisites Special comments or courses needed prior to taking the class

You should review the fall or spring Schedule of Classes booklet and choose courses that best suit your preferred academic load.  Be sure to review your tentative class schedule with your assigned academic advisor prior to registration.  Pay attention to the number of seats per each class versus the number available upon registration.  New students should review the number of available seats remaining in classes you are considering and choose alternative courses or sections for classes with 10 or less available seats.

Each semester, you will be assigned a term pin number that will be used when registering for classes on the RAIL.  This pin number is unique to each student and changes every semester.  The Schedule of Classes booklet contains complete step-by-step instructions on how to navigate the RAIL and register online.  Staff from the Registrar’s Office will be available to assist new students during summer registration.  The Registrar is also available to assist with registration during the fall, spring and summer.
