How do I keep my computer up-to-date? |
- Download all of the latest patches for your operating system. You may download these from the manufacturer's website:

- Install and update an anti-virus package with the latest virus definitions by using the update feature in the
anti-virus program or visiting the company's website. Check for updates weekly or set your antivirus program to automatically update.
- Microsoft Windows Users:
The Shepherd University Network Security system checks for Symantec Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee,
Trend Micro, Avast, EZTrust, Sophos, Microsoft-Windows-Onecare, Panda, eTrust,
Kaspersky and Grisoft-AVG.
Other anti-virus software vendors can be added by contacting us at
support@shepherd.edu.
- Mac OS X: If you download files from the Internet or
share files with others, regularly check for viruses on your hard disk using an anti-virus program.

Microsoft Windows Users: Run an anti-spyware scan
on your computer.
Microsoft Windows Defender and Spybot - Search and Destroy are free anti-spyware downloads. Run an anti-adware scan as well.
Visit Lavasoft for a free version of Adaware.

Enable your firewall.
All allowed Windows and Mac OS X versions have a firewall installed.
Visit the links below to verify that your firewall is enabled.

- Delete the internet cache (temporary internet files) on your hard drive.
These files are stored after viewed. They speed up the display of pages you have visited or view frequently.
Sometimes this causes problems in loading a page that you have previously visited.
