SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The International Education Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi, Shepherd Delta Psi Chapter, is hosting a professional development day for current and future teachers on Tuesday, November 11 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
“This opportunity for professional development right on campus involves a series of workshops to attend as students’ class schedules allow,” said Dr. LeAnn Johnson, visiting assistant professor of education. “Teacher candidates can come to all or select from the workshops offered.”
The workshop schedule includes:
- 8-9 a.m. — LinkedIn Workshop, Knutti 102 computer lab; LinkedIn is a professional networking service that can be used to share information with potential employers. Those attending should bring a flash drive with a professional picture, résumé, and artifacts from their portfolio. Helen Baker, Shepherd field placement coordinator, will provide examples and an hour of tutoring/support so participants leave with a LinkedIn profile established.
- 9-10 a.m. — Smart Board Workshop, Knutti 110; Michelle Holstein, Marshall University graduate, East Hardy Middle School Title 1 teacher, will share information on how to make the most of Smart Boards in the classroom.
- 10 a.m.-noon — “Motivation: Getting Students to Buy in is Half the Battle,” Student Center Blue-Grey Room; Courtney Stewart, veteran Baltimore High School teacher and behavior intervention specialist, now Harpers Ferry Middle School teacher, will present a variety of strategies for motivating students.
- 12:30-1:30 p.m. — “Who’s the Boss: Classroom Management with a Twist,” Student Center Blue-Grey Room; Erin Sponaugle, Shepherd graduate and 2014 Teacher of the Year, will share the strategies she uses in her fifth grade classroom to maximize learning and keep students engaged.
- 1:30-2:30 p.m. — “Hire Me: Résumé and Interview Advice for Teachers,” Student Center Blue-Grey Room; Sponaugle will walk participants through the process that local school systems use as they process applications, determine who to interview, and decide who gets the job.
- 3-4:30 p.m. — “Stay Out of Jail,” Student Center Blue-Grey Room; Clair Baker, family law master for Washington County, Maryland, will share legal information for prospective teachers, including how to deal with students in the classroom who may have a difficult home life.
Cost for the workshops are: free to active KDP members in good standing with preregistration; $5 for non KDP members who preregister; and $5 for KDP members and $10 for non-members who don’t preregister. The preregistration deadline is Monday, November 10.
