The George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War hosted an open house on June 10, which featured a keynote address by Dr. John E. Stealey III, Shepherd Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History.
Dennis Frye ’79, chief historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, introduced Dr. Stealey, who delivered a lecture titled “How Stonewall Jackson Rode Into Clarksburg: Statuary and Pathological Memory in West Virginia.”
Stealey taught history at Shepherd for 42 years. His general fields of research and specialization include American economic history, the southern Appalachian region, American legal history, black migration and educational development in the post-Civil War era, and post-Civil War border states and the Reconstruction south.
The director of the GTM Center is Dr. James Broomhall, assistant professor of history at Shepherd. Jennifer Alarcon is the center’s program assistant.
