Shurbutt speaks with senators, congressman about NEH

Dr. Sylvia Bailey Shurbutt attended the National Endowment for the Humanities directors meeting October 6 in Washington, D.C. Shurbutt joined Tim Robinson, NEH director of congressional affairs, on visits to speak with Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, and Representative Evan Jenkins and their staffs. According to Shurbutt, the three West Virginia legislators appeared to be solidly in support of the NEH and were very welcoming (and said very kind things about Shepherd). Shepherd hosts meeting on opioid epidemic

Shepherd University hosted a meeting of the Berkeley County Crucible for Change partners meeting on October 27. Assistant Provost Virginia Hicks provided a welcome to open the meeting, which examined the opioid epidemic. President Mary J. C. Hendrix joined Martinsburg Police Chief Maury Richards to talk about the Martinsburg Initiative, a joint effort of the Martinsburg Police Department, Berkeley County Schools, and Shepherd University to stem the opioid addiction problem by identifying and attempting to eliminate the basic causes of drug abuse in at-risk families. Participants in the Crucible for Change meeting were (l. to r.) Kevin Knowles, coordinator of Berkeley County Community Recovery Services; Dr. Virginia Hicks, assistant provost for academic community outreach; Ken Collinson, member of the Martinsburg City Council; Maury Richards, chief of Martinsburg Police Department; Tiffany Hendershot, social worker with Berkeley County Schools; Harriet Johnson, member of the Martinsburg City Council; and George Swartwood, deputy police chief for the Martinsburg Police Department.

Facilities Management employees wear pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

During the month of October, employees in the Facilities Management Department helped to raise awareness of the disease by wearing pink shirts every Friday. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Matt Ware, assistant director of grounds and custodial services, said the gesture is meant to offer support to those affected by breast and other forms of cancer. Weiss Brothers of Hagerstown, Inc., sponsored the shirts, which were worn by 50 employees in the department.

Technik representative visits campus

Alexa Tsui, vice president of business development of Technik, Inc. visited campus on October 16 to speak with students in the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Engineering. Nearly 40 CME students and several faculty members attended her presentation session to hear about internship and job opportunities offered by the firm. Located in Herndon, Virginia, Technik offers a wide range of management consulting, technology and outsourcing services and solutions. The firm offers practical experience, know-how, and a full spectrum of services and solutions that address IT challenges common across industries.

Event allows students to meet with accounting firm reps

The Accounting Club held its annual Meet the Firms event on October 11 in the Storer Ballroom. Ten companies, four different CPA review course representatives, a Shepherd University career advisor, and 19 students attended the event. The event provided accounting students the opportunity to learn more about the businesses and careers of the accounting field in the surrounding area.
