James R. (Jim) King, of Charleston, has joined the Shepherd staff as director of facilities management.
Reporting to the interim vice president for campus services, King is responsible for the overall operations of Shepherd’s physical facility assets and of maintenance, grounds, custodial, office, and contract personnel. He serves as the liaison with architects, engineers, contractors, and subcontractors providing services to the university, oversees the university-wide hazardous waste management program ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, and oversees and executes the campus facilities master plan.
King had served as the director of facilities and sustainability at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission since 2010 where he was responsible for oversight and coordination of capital construction projects at all baccalaureate institutions and coordination of efforts on campuses regarding sustainability and energy efficiency.
He began his career at the HEPC as director of design and planning to oversee and assist in design, construction, and planning of the West Virginia Regional Technology Park in South Charleston. He was then appointed to be the interim director of the technology park for a year before returning to the HEPC. Prior to that position, he was professor/facilities director at Bridgemont Community and Technical College in Montgomery.
King earned a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree from Marshall University and a Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech, and is currently in a Ph.D. program at West Virginia University for an advanced degree in resource management and sustainable development with a concentration in human and community development.
King holds a professional architectural registration with the West Virginia Board of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He is a LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional), with experience in sustainable and energy efficient building operations.
He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, AIA West Virginia, and United States Green Building Council and has served as president of the West Virginia Chapter of Association of Physical Plant Administrators.
King is the owner of Brick Street Architectural Consulting, which offers architectural assistance as well as design and production of residential and selected commercial projects as a single practitioner.
