West Virginia Department of Education, $20,000
The Department of Education has received a $20,333 grant from the West Virginia Department of Education Office of Early Learning to provide training that will promote literacy for students in PreK and elementary classrooms. The program, titled “Candidate/Teacher Literacy Collaborative for Improving Letter/Sound Recognition Instruction,” will focus on providing this training to Berkeley and Jefferson County school teachers and education majors from Shepherd placed in their classrooms for practicum experiences.

West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services, $2,500
Shepherd University received a $2,500 grant from the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services for its annual Aging Well Workshop, which is scheduled for May 8, 2018. This will mark the 10th year Shepherd has hosted the workshop, which offers continuing education credits for social workers and is open to members of the community, including elders and their families.
American Cancer Society and CVS Health Foundation, $15,000
Shepherd University has received a $15,000 grant from the American Cancer Society and CVS Health Foundation to advocate for, adopt, and possibly implement 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free campus policies. The grant is part of the American Cancer Society’s Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative, funded by the CVS Health Foundation, with a goal of delivering the first tobacco-free generation by accelerating and expanding the number of campuses across the country that prohibit smoking and tobacco use. The American Cancer Society will provide technical assistance and other resources, including education, communications, support to quit smoking, and evaluation. Shepherd will use the grant to support exploration and education around the use of tobacco on campus.

Berkeley County Industrial Park Development Fund, $8,000
The Martinsburg Center received an $8,000 grant from the Berkeley County Industrial Park Development Fund to help students achieve their education. The grant will provide scholarships for students seeking Master of Business Administration and Regents Bachelor of Arts degrees and stipends for students working in internships.
