President Mary J.C. Hendrix made a special presentation to the Café Society on August 14. During her presentation, Hendrix highlighted Shepherd’s strategic plan, “Transforming our Future: Implementing Change in an Era of Innovation,” and several programs such as the Shepherd Success Academy, Dinner With Strangers, and the newly created Veterans to Agriculture program and Shepherd Entrepreneurship Research Corporation.
Hendrix reviewed Shepherd’s tight budget and discussed what’s being done to deal with cuts made by the state, talked about volunteer efforts to refurbish Popodicon and its grounds, and reviewed the higher education politics that led to the formation of a blue-ribbon commission that is studying the current state of four-year institutions in West Virginia.
The Café Society, which is part of Shepherd’s Lifelong Learning program, is a weekly discussion group that has been meeting on campus for almost five years to discuss a wide range of current topics. The group’s goal is to facilitate a dialog among the older generation, students, and a cross section of professionals in the community who enjoy exchanging ideas and remaining abreast of current events.
Facilitated by Mike Austin, Jim Bowen, and Art Wineburg, the Café Society meets every Tuesday except holidays from 8:30-10 a.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education multipurpose room. It is free and open to anyone who wants to join the discussion.
