The IES has once again represented Shepherd University in the national RecycleMania competition.
RecycleMania is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program and the
National Recycling Coalition (NRC), and is coordinated as a project of NRC’s College and University
Recycling Council (CURC).

Protection Cabinet Secretary Stephanie R. Timmermeyer,
who was on campus on October 18, 2006, to meet with Dr. Snyder's Environmental Policy (ENVS 306) course.

The IES hosted the 2006 Alternative Energy Odyssey on Thursday, October 12,
2006, at the Frank Arts Center. See the conference

Dr. Ed Snyder, professor of environmental studies and Chair of IES,
and collaborator have just published the paper "New Fenestrate Bryozoa of the Gerster Limestone (Permian),
Medicine Range, Northeastern Nevada" in the Journal of Paleontology.
The Shepherd University Observatory hosted the Kickoff Event for the
Jefferson County Schools Education Foundation on October 3, 2006. The event's theme was "Helping Our
Children Shoot for the Stars". Attendees included representatives from the University,
the University Board of Governors, the Jefferson County Board of Education, and invited community guests.
Dr. Jason Best, associate professor of astrophysics,
gave the featured talk at the October 2006 meeting of the Shenandoah Astronomical Society
Dr. Clarissa Mathews, assistant professor of environmental studies,
and collaborators have just published the paper "Effect of floral and extrafloral resources on predation of
Aphis spiraecola by Harmonia axyridis on Apple" in the journal BioControl.

Journal of Science and Research for their recent grant activities.
Congratulations to environmental studies student
Kristin Retter, who won the Best Undergraduate Oral Research Presentation Award at the
2006 West Virginia Academy of Science meeting held at Shepherd University on April 22. Her research,
"Detailed taxonomoic analysis of a Rhabdomesoid Bryozoa morphological species", was supervised by Dr.
Edward Snyder of the Institute for Environmental Studies.
