Environmental Studies Major and Minor

The Environmental Studies Program at Shepherd College assists students in developing the knowledge and skills required to effectively analyze, manage, and protect the integrity of the Earth's natural resources. An Environmental Studies Degree assists students in developing the interdisciplinary background needed today to be an effective and highly skilled employee in a variety of environmental careers or graduate study.

The goals of the Environmental Studies Program are to provide the student with:

  1. The intellectual means for viewing the environment as a system of many interlocking part and processes, including physical, biological, cultural, political, and economic components.
  2. The awareness of and appreciation for the precious physical, biological and cultural resources on which our society depends and which we must properly conserve.
  3. The knowledge and technical skills for active participation in the environmental field and graduate study in environmentally related disciplines.
This highly structured, interdisciplinary degree prepares students with the technical skills necessary for employment or provides a competitive background for many graduate programs. An internship is required for majors and recommended for minors, as the hands-on experience provided furthers student understanding of the nature and application of the environmental sciences.

The Environmental Studies degree is a comprehensive major (does not require a minor) which includes a broad core in combination with one of five optional concentrations. In addition, the new noncomprehensive concentration (requires a minor) in Environmental Sustainability allows sutdents a greater curricular flexibility.
