Where: Shepherd College (Shepherdstown, WV) and selected field and schoolyard sites.

Who can attend: 9 (nine) in-service teachers and 9 (nine) pre-service teachers, selected by application.

Deadline: All applications must be received by May 31, 2002, to be considered.

Stipend: $400.00 awarded upon completion of the two week course. $120.00 awarded upon completion of two Saturday followup meetings in Fall 2002.

Credit: 3 undergraduate (Shepherd) or graduate (WVU) credits awarded upon completion of the two week course and two Saturday followup meetings in Fall 2002. Tuition will be waived for the undergraduate or graduate credit.

About the Course: Field-oriented format with practical applications of the biological and earth sciences to schools and outdoor/schoolyard classrooms. The major course components:

Lecture: Instructors will employ scientific inquiry as a central theme to enhance skills in earth, environmental, and space sciences.

Lab: Through hands-on activities, the lecture component will be linked to laboratory techniques and tools. Instructional materials will be provided.

Field Study: Earth, environmental, and space sciences all originate in the field. The field experience will connect lecture and lab components to the real world, including one required overnight field excursion to Green Bank, Dolly Sods, and Seneca Rocks.

Schoolyards: The lecture, lab, and field components will be synthesized into the development of lesson plans, providing useful applications to classrooms and schoolyards.
