First-Year Experience for Recreation and Leisure Studies

Course Description: This course will prepare the student for a successful academic career and provide information about the Recreation/Sport and Leisure Services industry through course readings, assignments, class discussions, community service and practical application of course materials.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students in this course will be assessed on their ability to:

    o   Enhance academic skills of thinking, listening, writing, speaking and reading

    o   Learn college customs, reading skills, mnemonic skills, test-taking skills, emotional intelligence skills, and writing skills

    o   Develop practice of self-reflection through journaling to understand self

    o   Utilize campus resources

    o   Be introduced to the field of Recreation and to thinkers who have contributed to the field of Recreation and its language 

    o   Learn Shepherd University's traditions, services, Sakai program, and advisement
