SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVSHEPHERDSTOWN, WVTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 7:30 P.M.

The Shepherd University Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Sport is sponsoring a sitting volleyball tournament on Thursday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Butcher Center gymnasium. The public is invited to attend the event, which is free and being organized by the Adaptive Sport and Event Management class.

“Sitting volleyball is a parasport that requires teamwork and a lot of eye-hand coordination,” said Tracy Willauer, adjunct professor. “There will be a tournament with teams with 6-10 players. Winners move on until we can crown one team champion.”

Sitting volleyball was first demonstrated as a Paralympic sport in 1976 in the Toronto Olympics. It is very similar to regular volleyball, except players must have part of their lower body on the ground at all times, each set goes to 25 rather than 21 points, and the court is smaller and the nets shorter to accommodate players at ground level.

Willauer said by hosting the tournament, the class hopes to raise awareness for parasports and introduce something new and exciting to the Shepherd community.
