SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The President’s Lecture Series sponsored by Shepherd University’s Lifelong Learning Program continues on Thursday, September 22, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education with a talk about personal finances.

Rob Hoxton, managing director of United Capital Financial Life Management, will present “Finding Your Money Mind,” a talk about the relationship people have with money. Hoxton will take audience members through an interactive exercise based on the bestselling book “The Money Code” that will tell them whether they make monetary decisions based on fear, happiness, or commitment. The audience is encouraged to bring a smart phone, tablet, or laptop to play the “Your Money Mind” game.

Hoxton has been a financial planner in Shepherdstown for about 25 years. Throughout that time he’s helped many people plan for retirement and has worked with them after they retire.

“What I find is the biggest driver of financial success and planning success isn’t necessarily which stock or bond you buy, or when you buy or sell it, but what decisions you make and the timing of those decisions. That’s all emotional,” Hoxton said. “There’s quite a bit of new research about behavioral finance, but it’s pretty academic. What I’m going to try to do in this lecture is to bring that home and make it usable for folks. To help people understand what their basic proclivities are when making financial decisions—what their money mind is.”

Hoxton hopes the lecture will help audience members better understand why they make the decisions they make and what they can do to improve their financial decision-making.

The lecture is free and open to the public. To RSVP for this event, contact Karen Rice at 304-876-5135 or at krice@shepherd.edu. There will be a reception following the lecture sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation.
