HONORS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS

This is a partial listing of scholarships that may be available through the Honors Program. Please be aware that, due to market fluctations, not all of these scholarships will be available every year. Feel free to contact the Honors Office for more information on these and other scholarships that may be available.

Presidential Scholarship
Shepherd University Presidential Scholarships are awarded to freshman students who have demonstrated outstanding academic potential based on both their high school grades in a college preparatory program and their scores on either the American College Test or the Scholastic Assessment Test. The quality of high school courses as well as extracurricular activities both within and outside the high school will also be considered. Scholarships also may be awarded to transfer students who have demonstrated outstanding academic progress based on their own college course work and grades.

The Honors Program awards several Presidential Scholarships to candidates who stand out for their high academic achievements, their leadership in high school activities, and their community service. These $1,500.00 Presidential Scholarships may be renewed yearly for a total of four years as long as the recipient maintains a cumulative yearly Shepherd GPA of 3.2 and completes at least 15 semester hours of course work per semester. For consideration for the Presidential Scholarships, students must complete the admissions application process by the stated application deadlines.

Rubye Clyde Scholarship
The Rubye Clyde Scholarship is established by the Shepherd University Foundation in recognition of Rubye Clyde McCormick and is designed for outstanding West Virginia students with solid academic credentials. This $5,000 scholarship is renewable if the student meets academic criteria established by the Shepherd University Foundation. In order to renew the scholarship, the student must have a 3.5 GPA or above with a course load of 15 credit hours per semester. This scholarship is open to a student in any major or field of study.

Ralph and Margaret Burkhart Scholarship
One Burkhart Scholarship is awarded to an Honors Program candidate each year. This scholarship provides $5,000 per academic year for tuition and fees, room and board, and books and supplies. Minimum selection criteria include a high school GPA of 3.5, scores of 1270 on the SAT and/or 30 on the ACT. This scholarship is renewable each year based on the following criteria: enrollment and completion of a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester and a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Hearst Foundation Scholarship
One Hearst Scholarship is awarded to an Honors Program candidate each year. The minimum selection criteria are a high school GPA of 3.5 and an SAT score of 1200 or an average ACT score of 27. The scholarship provides $1500 per academic year and is renewable for up to eight semesters or completion of a bachelor's degree if the student maintains a 3.0 GPA as a freshman and a 3.25 thereafter, successfully completes 24 semester hours per year, and remains active in the Honors Program. The scholarship has an emphasis on minorities and women.

Graduate Scholarship Opportunities
Many scholarships exists to fund graduate level study. Shepherd University has a number of faculty who assist students in applying for such scholarships. A list of graduate scolarships and their Shepherd faculty representatives can be found on the Graduate Scholarships page.
