Shepherdstown,West Virginia, located on the banks of the Potomac River, saw the passing of hundreds of thousands of soldiers as the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia waged their various campaigns during the four years of conflict. In addition to several skirmishes around Shepherdstown itself, the bloodiest day of the war, the Battle of Antietam, occurred just a few miles north of town near Sharpsburg, Maryland, with Shepherdstown becoming a vast Confederate hospital in the wake of that battle.
