THE GEORGE TYLER MOORE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF THE CIVIL WAR
Students interested in the Civil War era may volunteer at Shepherd University's George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, which is engaged in a long-term project to establish a Civil War soldier database, with initial emphasis on West Virginia soldiers. The Center also has a magnificent Civil War library, and sponsors lectures by leading authorities on antebellum and Civil War history, summer seminars and battlefield tours. PHI ALPHA THETA
The department sponsors a local chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international honor society in history.  In its first 30 years, Pi-Epsilon chapter inducted over 300 members.  The society meets monthly during the academic year, often in a faculty home, and participates in the annual Washington area conference where students present papers in competition with students from other colleges and universities.  The chapter also organizes picnics and social gatherings.
