Shepherdstown_1864Following the battle of Antietam, Shepherdstown, (West) Virginia became a "Town of Temporary Hospitals" – "Local newspapers recounted that, in addition to the unfinished Town Hall, almost all buildings of any reasonable size in town were pressed into service as temporary hospitals –private homes, churches, lodge halls, schools, and warehouses, including the old, abandoned tobacco warehouse on the banks of the Potomac."
