MULTICULTURAL STRANDS IN GENERAL STUDIES

The faculty and staff of Shepherd are committed to a general studies curriculum that reflects the cultural diversity of America and the global diversity of an ever-smaller, more interconnected world. To this end, "multicultural strands" are infused in the following General Studies courses:

Written English I and II (ENGL 101, 102)

Survey of American Literature (ENGL 204)

Survey of World Literature I and II (ENGL 208, 209)
English courses highlight ethnic writers and both Eastern and Western philosophic ideas and traditions.

Asian Traditions (HIST 100)

Ancient Through Medieval History (HIST 101)

Renaissance through French Revolution (HIST 102)

French Revolution to Present (HIST 103)
History courses focus on cultural and historical events and ideas from Eastern and Western traditions.

General Sociology (SOCI 203)
Sociology deals with the origin and development of diverse groups and social changes.

Politics and Government (PSCI 100)

American Federal Government (PSCI 101)
A number of multicultural topics, including civil rights and immigration issues, appear in American Federal Government, and ethnic and gender political issues appear in Politics and Government.

Introduction to Music (MUSC 111)
NonWestern as well as Western music is explored in this overview introduction to music.
