Scarborough Society Events
Scarborough Gala
The Scarborough Gala is the major annual social and fundraising event of the Scarborough Society of Shepherd University. The Society hosts the event in cooperation with the Shepherd University Foundation. All proceeds from the gala support and enhance library programs and facilities to benefit the Shepherd University community. Always a highlight of the summer season, the gala is generally attended by several hundred Scarborough members, guests and friends. The event has raised over $100,000 in the past ten years. Past galas have paid homage to such literary figures as Ernest Hemingway, William Shakespeare, Graham Greene, and Frances Hodgson Bennett. Visit our gallery of gala history and photos.
Scarborough Society Art & Lecture Series
Each year, the Scarborough Society and the Shepherd University Foundation sponsor a lecture series featuring diverse topics and speakers relevant to the academic and cultural community. Past speakers have included local authors, faculty members, and visiting professors and topics have ranged from historical perspectives to current affairs. The always-popular Faculty Art Show and opening reception each February is also part of the lecture series. The 2011-12 series of the Scarborough Art & Lecture series is underway! This season will include events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Shepherdstown. Be sure to check our calendar often, as new events are added on an ongoing basis.
