Scarborough Society Events

Scarborough Gala
The Scarborough Gala is the major annual social and fundraising event of the Scarborough Society of Shepherd University. The Society hosts the event in cooperation with the Shepherd University Foundation. All proceeds from the gala support and enhance library programs and facilities to benefit the Shepherd University community. Always a highlight of the summer season, the gala is generally attended by several hundred Scarborough members, guests and friends. The event has raised over $100,000 in the past 12 years. In 2013, the gala raised nearly $29,000 - our most successful year yet! Past galas have paid homage to such literary figures as Ernest Hemingway, William Shakespeare, Graham Greene, and Frances Hodgson Bennett. Visit our gallery of gala history and photos.

Scarborough Society Art & Lecture Series
Each year, the Scarborough Society and the Shepherd University Foundation sponsor a lecture series featuring diverse topics and speakers relevant to the academic and cultural community. Past speakers have included local authors, faculty members, and visiting professors and topics have ranged from historical perspectives to current affairs. The always-popular Faculty Art Show and opening reception each September is also part of the lecture series. Be sure to check our calendar often, as new events are added on an ongoing basis. To discover what the Scarborough Society Art & Lecture Series has to offer, check out our gallery of speakers and events.

Scarborough Society Bus Trips

The Scarborough Society hosts an always-popular annual bus trip to regional and cultural places of interest. Past trips have included a tour of Loudoun County wineries, as well as trips to the Philadelphia Constitution Center, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Capitol Visitor Center with a tour of the U.S. Capitol. Most recently, Society members enjoyed an outing to the Newseum in Washington, D.C., where they enjoyed a unique experiencing combining news history with modern technology and interactive displays.Want to see where the Scarborough Society has been lately?
