The Scarborough Society The mission of the Scarborough Society is to provide new sources of supplemental funding for the Shepherd University library system through a membership society dedicated to enhancing its collections, programs, and technologies. Inspired by the Scarborough Library's magnificent addition and restoration, the Scarborough Society of Shepherd University was founded in 2002 to endow and strengthen the Shepherd University library system. This year, the organization celebrated its 10th anniversary with a public reception and open house showcasing the library’s newest equipment and resources, all funded in part by the Scarborough Society. The event also recognized the Society’s partnership with the Scarborough Library staff and their commitment to developing information technology and resources for Shepherd students, faculty, and the surrounding community over the past decade. In honor of 10 successful years of enhancing the library’s programs and facilities, check out 10 of the Scarborough Society’s most notable endeavors made possible by your membership and private contributions. Annual membership dues and Gala proceeds provide the funds to support and enhance the library's collections, technological services, and most recently, the Shepherdstown Film Society. The Society currently has more than 225 members, whose names are listed on a special Wall of Honor in the library's Reading Room. Over the past ten years, the Scarborough Society has raised over $300,000 for the library, including $100,000 for two long-term endowments. The Scarborough Gala is the Society's major annual social and fundraising event. Additionally, the group sponsors an annual art and lecture series, as well as annual bus excursions to regional points of interest which in the past have included local wineries, the National Constitutions Center in Philadelphia, PA, and various Washington, D.C. attractions.
