SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Several Shepherd University faculty members and students are making presentations during the 96th Annual West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (WVAHPERD) state conference on Thursday and Friday, October 26 and 27, at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Shepherdstown.
WVAHPERD is the state’s professional organization representing physical and health education teachers and those in related fields. The coordinator of this year’s conference is Dr. Andro Barnett, Shepherd professor of recreation and leisure studies. More than 200 college students, professors, and K-12 teachers from West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware are signed up to attend the conference.
Dr. Kelly Huffer, assistant professor of nursing education, will give a talk titled “De-mystifying the management of the student athlete with concussion.” The talk is geared to the athletes, health care providers, coaches, team members, and higher education professors.
Dr. Stacey Kendig, acting dean for and chair of Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Sport, along with students Madi Welder, Martinsburg, and Lee Schneider, Brunswick, Maryland, will present “Concussion Simulator,” where participants will try an obstacle course set up to challenge both the physical and mental abilities of a person with a concussion. There will be different levels of concussion goggles available for the simulation.
Dr. Greg Place, associate professor of recreation and leisure studies, and Melissa Hall, assistant professor of recreation studies, along with students Laura Bradley, Shepherdstown, John Coleman, Hedgesville, and Joel Singh, Silver Spring, Maryland, will present “Programming After-School Recreational Activities.” This session examines and discusses guidelines and techniques for programming after school recreational activities.
Other presenters from Shepherd include Dr. Jared Androzzi, associate professor of physical education, and Helen Baker, education field placement coordinator, “Utilizing Students’ Creativity to Develop Exciting Learning Activities;” Dr. Rhonda Hovatter, associate professor of physical education, and Dr. Julia Tracy, adjunct health and physical education faculty, “Teaching and Assessing Dance Content at the Secondary Level;” Dr. Desmond Lawless, visiting assistant professor of health and physical education, and Jessica Graham, director of Shepherd’s human performance lab, “Why Are Playing Are Small—Sides Games Fun;” Valerie Dudash, adjunct physical education professor, “Skateboarding in Physical Education Class;” and Dr. Elvira Allison, acting dean for and chair of Department of Education, “A Tete A Tete Analysis of the School Lunch Programs in the United States and France.”
