Designated as one of the
Peaks of Excellence at Shepherd University, the Department of English and Modern
Languages has a multi-talented faculty whose enthusiasm and expertise are the
Department's primary asset.
All full-time faculty have Ph.D. degrees from
universities across the country and degree specialties that cover the complete
range of literature and linguistics courses. The English faculty represents some
of the finest teaching and scholarship to be found in any department on campus,
and a variety of teaching methods and critical approaches insures a well-rounded
and open-minded student population.
The English faculty and their students take
full advantage of Shepherd's close proximity to Washington, with its literary
and cultural institutions such as the
Folger Shakespeare Library and Theatre,
Arena Stage, the
Kennedy Center, as well as other museum and cultural opportunities. Class
sizes of advanced courses averages 15 students.

historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Shepherd University is a state-supported
institution established in 1871. With a strong liberal arts curriculum, Shepherd
offers some 4800 students more than 70 programs of study, including bachelor's
degree, pre-professional studies, and master's programs.
NCAA Division II sports competitions
and programs such as the
Center for the Study of the Civil War, the
Contemporary American Theater Festival, and the
Appalachian Heritage
Festival provide both students and the community a wide range of entertainment,
learning, and cultural experiences. The University's picturesque location on
