Dr. Loewen-Schmidt's CV

Dr. Loewen-Schmidt is an Assistant Professor of English in the Department of English and Modern Languages. He has travelled, studied, or taught in a variety of countries including Sweden, Lithuania, Malaysia, India, Kenya, and the Maldives. Before coming to Shepherd University, Dr. Loewen-Schmidt taught at Fresno State and then at Rutgers University. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Rutgers in 2009. His teaching and research interests include eighteenth-century English literature and culture, the history and theory of the novel, Milton, Nietzsche, Gothic and Sentimental Fiction, Aphra Behn, Critical Theory, Psychoanalysis, the Ancient Greek Romances, Homer, and World Literature. His article on Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, winner of Eighteenth-Century Fiction's 2008 graduate essay contest, will be in print in its Fall 2009 edition. He is currently working on larger project on the history and politics of pity/compassion in eighteenth-century fiction.
