Area of Specialization
Mr. Hershey has taught English and served as department chair at South High in Hagerstown, Maryland. He also chaired South's Middle States evaluation. An early experimenter with educational technology, Mr. Hershey piloted AP English on interactive television. He acted as liaison from the Washington County (Maryland) Board of Education to the Maryland State Department of Education for ten years, developing, implementing, and monitoring the state functional writing program and test with representatives from other districts across the state. Additionally, he served for fifteen years as a writing consultant to Frederick County, Maryland, for their middle school writing assessment. He also has been active in the Tech Prep initiative and has presented at conferences in New Jersey, South Carolina, and Texas. Trained as a facilitator by the Center for Occupational Research and Development, Mr. Hershey has conducted focus groups bringing educators and the business community together to evaluate course content. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Conference on College Composition, and the National Education Association. Having taught nearly everything in the English curriculum over the past 36 years, literature and composition remain his favorites. Mr. Hershey loves books, volunteering (currently serving as chair of the Hagerstown Preservation Design District Commission), antiques, and cats. A new adventure for him is selling on eBay, as well as recently obtaining a real estate license. You're never too old to learn new tricks!
