unlocking the novel
a guide to modernism and postmodernism

The modern reader 101

Some things to consider about Modernism:

Modernism is a break from realism. Instead of attempting to capture the real world, authors are questioning the perception and experience of reality. How we perceive time is very important.

Structure
is THE POINT. How you read is as important as what you read.

Think Collage. Fragmented narrative, seemingly random perspectives, fractured time; it all adds up to a deliberately constructed whole.

Connect to something. Whether it is the story, a character, or the author’s writing style, it helps to humanize the novel and bring it down out of the clouds.

Understand that TIME is your friend and your worst enemy.
Clue: the moment is key. Past, present and future are condensed into the moment

Slow down
. Read fast? Sorry, you can’t do that here. Get used to it.
