SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY

Learn why English is a great degree - and why Shepherd is an unbeatable place to study the liberal arts.

Shepherd University's Department of English & Modern Languages offers the ideal blend of liberal arts education and vocational preparation. The major and minor in English as well as the minors in French and Spanish give students a solid grounding in the study of literature, while programs in English Education, Journalism, and Technical Communication lead to jobs in a range of professions.

There's always something exciting happening in the Department of English & Modern Languages. Visit this site each week to explore a new feature of the week.

The Shepherd University English Department is sponsoring a trip to England during spring break, March 12-2, 2009, with a focus on the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  Participants will spend two days in the medieval city of York , visiting York Minster--the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe --the medieval castle, and Viking and Roman ruins. The remainder of the trip will be spent in London , touring the Tower of London , Westminster Cathedral, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the British Museum , and much more.  Day trips to Stratford-upon-Avon and Henry VIII's palace at Hampton Court will also be included.

Any student participating in the trip can earn 3 credits, regardless of major or year.  English majors and minors and English Education majors may also take ENGL 430, British Literature and the Prominence of Place, during the spring 2009 semester, for an additional 3 credits.  This course will fulfill the requirement for the Ancient/Medieval/Renaissance period grouping or the Restoration/18 th Century period grouping.

If you enroll before the end of July, the cost of the trip is $2400 for participants 23 and under and $2700 for participants over 23.  This price includes round-trip airfare, airport departure fees, hotels (all with private baths), all breakfasts, 7-day tube pass in London , and entrance fees to all sites.  This trip is open to community members as well as students.
