Department of Social Work to co-sponsor April 5 educational event on child sexual abuse

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Shepherd University Department of Social Work, West Virginia University School of Social Work-Martinsburg, and Kids in Transition Collaborative present “Child Sexual Abuse: A Community Panel Discussion” on Thursday, April 5, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 220 West Martin Street, Martinsburg.

The purpose of this event is to educate community members about the prevalence of sexual abuse in the area and its impact on children. This event also seeks to raise awareness of the multidisciplinary response to child sexual abuse, while providing community members with information on ways to prevent the abuse and protect children.

Panelists include Ami Sirbaugh, child advocate with Safe Haven Child Advocacy Center in Martinsburg; Kelly Bober, executive director of the ChildSafe Center-CAC in Winchester, Virginia; Cindy Leahy, forensic nurse examiner with Valley Health System; T’zouri Oliver, West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources; and Debbie Young, Jefferson County Victim Assistance Program.
