SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — A teach-in sponsored by the Shepherd University Department of Political Science will explore the world of fake news and polling. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, March 29, from noon-1 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium.
Panelists will be Dr. Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer, associate professor of political science, who will discuss how to distinguish between reputable and questionable polls and surveys and agenda-setting with respect to reporting; Dr. Aart Holtslag, assistant professor of political science, discussing the importance of issue-framing and the way it shapes how individuals process information; and Dr. James Lewin, professor of English and a journalism expert, who will explain the difficulties journalists face in the current climate and how their roles and responsibilities continue to evolve. Dr. Joseph Robbins, associate professor of political science and chair of the political science department, will moderate the discussion.
