Debate team wins at state tournament

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Debate and Forensics Team came back from the annual West Virginia Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament with several wins, including second place overall, first place in the team debate category, and second in individual events. The tournament took place February 25-28 at WVU-Parkersburg.

Team members include Hunter Cutlip, Clarksburg; Lance Wines, Winchester, Virginia; David Bennett, Hedgesville; Brooke Poling, Parkersburg; Graham Scott, Buckhannon; Jenn Dickey, Mount Airy, Maryland; Jamin Branch, Mason; Kira Northrop, Shady Side, Maryland; and Jessica Fort and Charlotte Bellotte, both from Charles Town.

The students placed in the following debate categories—Lincoln-Douglas Debate (W-L Record), Hunter Cutlip, first place, and Lance Wines, fourth place; Lincoln-Douglas Debate (Speaker Points), Hunter Cutlip, second place; IPDA Debate (W-L Record), David Bennett, second place; IPDA Debate semifinalists, Brooke Poling and David Bennett; IPDA Debate (Speaker Points), Brooke Poling, fourth place, and Graham Scott, fifth place.

Students placing in interpretive event categories include—Program Oral Interpretation, Jenn Dickey, first place (tie); Dramatic Duo, Jen Dickey and Kira Northrop, third place, and Jamin Branch and Kira Northrop, fourth place; Dramatic Interpretation, Kira Northrop, fourth place; Poetry Interpretation, Jessica Fort, fifth place, and Jenn Dickey, sixth place; and Prose Interpretation, Kira Northrop, sixth place

Individual Event winners include—Informative Speaking, Charlotte Bellotte, first place, Brooke Poling, third place, and Jessica Fort, fourth place; After-Dinner Speaking, Hunter Cutlip, third place, and Lance Wines, fifth place; Broadcasting, Graham Scott, third place, and Charlotte Bellotte, fifth place; Extemporaneous Speaking, Hunter Cutlip, third place; Improv Duo, Hunter Cutlip and Jenn Dickey, third place, Kira Northrop and Lance Wines, fourth place, and Jamin Branch and Graham Scott, fifth place; Impromptu Speaking, Hunter Cutlip, sixth place; Persuasive, David Bennett, fourth place, and Charlotte Bellotte, sixth place; Rhetorical Criticism, Jessica Fort, fourth place, and Brooke Poling, sixth place; and Pentathalon, Hunter Cutlip, sixth place.
