SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Debate and Forensics Team placed in the top five at the two tournaments it participated in this semester. The team took third place overall in the College Forensics Association Holiday Tournament November 18-19 at Randolph-Macon College and fourth place at Morgan State University November 4-5.
At Randolph-Macon, winners in the parliamentary debate speaker category were David Bennett, Hedgesville, first place, and Sam Brown, Harpers Ferry, fourth place. The parliamentary debate team of Brown and Casey Feezle, Augusta, earned second place while Bennett and Will Wheatley, Harpers Ferry, took fifth place.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Lance Wines, Winchester, Virginia, won fourth place and Wheatley took sixth place. In prose interpretation, Maggie Nevin, Martinsburg, came in second. For poetry interpretation Karen Paiz, Silver Spring, Maryland, won fourth place and Katie Zakrzewski, Berkeley Springs, took fifth place. In persuasive speaking Bennett won first place and Hunter Cutlip, Clarksburg, took third place. In communication analysis Lauren Duckworth, Kingwood, took fourth place. Feezle won sixth place in after dinner speaking and fifth place in extemporaneous speaking. Cutlip won fourth and Brown came in sixth in impromptu speaking.
Aside from placing fourth at Morgan State, three students received distinction. In extemporaneous speaking, Bennett took first place while Feezle was the top-ranked novice. In impromptu speaking, Wines came in fourth. In persuasive speaking, Bennett won first place while Cutlip came in third. Duckworth reached the finals in poetry and took fourth place for Shepherd’s team. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Wines and Wheatley reached the quarterfinals.
Shepherd’s team also hosted the CFA Fall Tournament November 3 in which nine teams from other schools competed.
