Helping You Help Others Learn

UPDATES FROM THE ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER

Many of you already know that Karen Austin will be leaving us this summer.  I wanted to take a moment to thank her for her many contributions to our campus community.  For more than a decade, Karen has been highly instrumental in helping our students reach their academic goals.  Under her leadership, the Writing Center, and later, the Academic Support Center, has supported countless students through tutoring, advising, stretch courses, and numerous other resources and programs.  Her efforts have greatly enhanced retention and have helped Shepherd become the unique, caring and learning-centered institution that it is today.  Karen will be greatly missed.  Please join me in thanking her and wishing her all the best with her future endeavors!

I would like to announce that Joseph (Joe) Green has accepted our offer to direct the Center after Karen’s departure.  Joe has over twenty years of experience in Higher Education and holds an M.A. in English from Truman State University.  He has taught several courses in composition and literature and has served as the conference coordinator for the national “Writing Across the Curriculum Conference” in St. Louis.  Most recently, Joe served as an English Professor and an Associate Academic Dean at William Penn University in Iowa.  His accomplishments there include establishing and directing an Academic Resource Center, establishing and directing a First-Year Experience Program and devising an “early alert system” for identifying at-risk students.  Joe is currently completing his doctorate in English at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

I would like to thank the members of the search committee for all of their hard work with this search process. I know everyone will join me in welcoming Joe when he arrives on campus in June.

Clinical Mathematics Instructor hired:

The Academic Support Center is pleased to announce that we have a new member of our team joining us for Fall 2008.  Richard Campbell will be working as an instructor of mathematics, teaching Math 101A/B and working with Françoise Nelles to supervise the lab assistants.   Richard comes to Shepherd from Hagerstown Community College where he has been teaching college algebra, statistics and developmental math.  Richard has studied both math and education on the undergraduate and graduate level. Most recently, he has completed a Master of Education from Frostburg University with a concentration in mathematics and business.   Richard has a lot of energy for teaching students who struggle with algebra, and he is interested in all facets of the task from designing coursework, tutoring one-on-one, lecturing and assessing students’ progress.    Please join us in welcoming Richard to Shepherd University.
