THE COMMON READING PROGRAM

SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY COMMON READING 2008 - SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for the Common Reading for 2008 has begun. The method of selection was developed by the FYEX Taskforce in November 2007.  Flyers were sent to all employees and broadcast emails were sent to students, soliciting suggestions for the book to be used as the Shepherd University Common Reading for 2008. The selection criteria require that the book be of interest to a wide audience, be reasonable in cost and length, and be readily accessible. Over 40 books were recommended.

The FYEX Task Force will be busy over the holidays reading the books suggested by students and faculty. With such a great variety of suggestions, we are certain to find a book that meets the needs of a wide variety of readers. We are open to suggestions from faculty as to how to more fully incorporate the reading in classes at all levels, not just General Studies classes.  We will again include the Shepherdstown community in a One Book, One Community program, inviting them to read and participate in the discussions of the chosen Common Reading.

On January 14th, the committee will reconvene to narrow the list to five final selections.  These five selections will then be voted upon by all SU faculty and staff via the web. The book with the most votes will then become the official Shepherd University Common Reading for the year.

We appreciate your involvement and suggestions in this process and look forward to soon announcing the next selection for the Shepherd University Common Reading Program.
