TRIO Student Support Services

The Center for Teaching and Learning is proud to announce that Shepherd University has been awarded a $1.1 million, five-year renewable grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Student Support Services TRIO program.

Grant funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of the Student Support Services program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. Shepherd will receive $220,000 in annual funding for the program.

Student Support Services projects provide academic tutoring, which may include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, science, and other subjects; advice and assistance in postsecondary course selection; information on the full range of student financial aid programs, benefits, and resources for locating public and private scholarships; and assistance in completing financial aid applications. Education or counseling services designed to improve financial and economic literacy and assist students in applying for admission to graduate and professional programs are also provided.

The SSS Program will be housed at the Center for Teaching and Learning in Scarborough Library and will begin accepting students this academic year.  We extend a very special thank you to our own Judi McIntyre, First-Year Experience Director and Jerry Lewis, Executive Director of Academic Achievement Programs at the University of Maryland, College Park for their invaluable work in leading this initiative.  We also extend thanks to Sara Maene, Helena Cole and Sandra Oerley-Bennett for supplying a wealth of time and data.  We look very forward to serving our students in the near future.  For more information, please contact Shepherd University's TRiO Student Support Services Office at 304-876-5775.
