New Awards Plaques in the Dr. Howard N. Carper Jr. Learning Commons
The Carper Learning Commons, located in the lower level of the Scarborough Library, houses the offices of the Center for Teaching & Learning, Academic Support Center, TRiO Student Support Services, First-Year Experience program, Common Reading program, Audio/Visual Media Services, Regent’s Bachelor of Art’s program, and User Support. It is also the location of several new plaques that have been commissioned to display the accomplishments of our faculty.
Since 1987, four Shepherd University faculty members have been selected as West Virginia Professor of the Year, most recently in 2010 with Dr. Edward Snyder receiving the honor. A bronze plaque naming Shepherd recipients of this award has been erected in the main foyer of the Carper Learning Commons. Other recipients included on the plaque are: Mrs. Margaret Byrer (1987), Dr. Linda Tate (2003) and Dr. Sylvia Shurbutt (2006).
A second plaque in this area names the recipients of Shepherd University’s Outstanding Faculty Awards, given annually to one faculty member in each of the following categories:
- Outstanding Advisor: Dr. Gordon DeMeritt
- Outstanding Scholar: Dr. Joseph Robbins
- Outstanding Service: Dr. Rebecca Mercado
- Outstanding Teacher: Dr. Carol Plautz
Both of these plaques were purchased by the Office of Academic Affairs and will be updated as new recipients are chosen. Please stop by when you have a moment to admire these lovely additions to our Learning Commons.
