Academic Support Center (ASC)

The ASC had new beginnings and continued growth this semester! In September we were notified of our successful re-accredited CRLA writing tutoring program.

The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) is an international mentor training program certification that “provides professional development for college professionals active in [college] tutoring programs”. As a result of this certification, Director of Academic Support, Emily Gross, is now authorized to certify each tutor as he or she completes each level of our tutor training program. Tutors who reach the certification will be able to enhance their resumes with this internationally recognized program!

A new initiative this semester was the addition our Academic Success Workshops. The ASC partnered with Residential Life offering workshops in various residential halls on a variety of topics ranging from time management and academic advising topreparing for finals. A total of 65 Shepherd students attended these workshops this semester. We hope to increase our attendance for the Spring 2012 semester.  A current schedule for the workshops has already been finalized and topics will include note-taking, reading comprehension, and how to be a successful student.

We had a new addition to our ASC team, Katie Branson! Katie came to us as a CSDA graduate student. Her practicum with our center included exploration on assessment and development and delivery of our new Academic Success Workshops.

Business was bustling this semester as we held 2,402 tutor reservations with a total of 594 students. Our total tutees increased by 39 students when compared to last fall. Sixty-two percentof these students established semester-long tutoring relationships by attending two or more appointments throughout the term.
