Academic Advisement Update

The Fall semester saw CTL Dean, Dr. Laura Renninger & Asst. CTL Dean, Dr. Robert Warburton working with Retention Specialist, Helena Cole on a pilot advising project for undeclared majors. The pilot involved assigning students to a secondary advisor who aided the academic advisor in keeping the student up-to-date and informed of academic policies. The project has shown some success and will continue through the Spring semester.

Two advisor workshops were offered this fall and were well attended. Topics covered included instructing advisors as to how to help advisees navigate through the Degree Evaluation, and “What If” Analyses on RAIL. Dr. Warburton and Dr. Renninger also focused closely on advising processes with the second-year faculty in their learning community meetings.  Many thanks to the Registrar, Tracy Seffers for her help in making all of these sessions a success.

The Academic Advising Committee developed a new survey (with the bulk of the work being handled by Dr. Dot Hively) for assessing academic advising. A trial run was conducted in the Fall and the survey will be widely used in the Spring of 2010.

A Spring 2010 Advisor Workshop is in the planning stages. The tentative topic for the workshop is "Advisors Working with Students with Disabilities." Stay tuned for more information!
