Persepolis is a wise, funny, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.
In black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from age 6 to 14 that saw the overthrow of the Shah's regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. Satrapi bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country.

Welcome!

Welcome to Shepherd University’s Common Reading Program!

This year the graphic novel Persepolis, by Iranian-born writer Marjane Satrapi, was chosen by faculty, staff and students as the 2008 Common Reading selection.  We will be celebrating themes from Persepolis in a number of ways – all of them fun, exciting and educational. Join us on this magic Persian carpet ride; there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Explore the links on the left side of this webpage for up-to-date information about events throughout the year, both on and off-campus, as we celebrate Persepolis during the 2008 Common Reading.  Residents of Shepherdstown and the surrounding area are welcome and encouraged to attend any of the featured events as part of the One Book, One Community program.

A complimentary copy of Persepolis is being given to all first-year students during Advising/Registration sessions; free copies are also available for faculty wishing to use the book in their classes. Persepolis is available for checkout from the Scarborough Library and Shepherdstown Public Library.  It is available for purchase from the Shepherd University Bookstore, Four Seasons Bookstore, and online.  For more information, contact Judi McIntyre, Director of the First-Year Experience, 876-5396 or jmcintyr@shepherd.edu, or visit us on Facebook.
