Persepolis Events 2008-2009

Shepherd University will be celebrating the Common Reading, Persepolis, during the entire 2008-2009 academic year.  There are many fun, exciting and educational experiences planned.  Events will be added to this page as they are finalized.  All of our events are open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend.  For more information, call Judi McIntyre, 876-5396.

Persepolis, the movie:

Monday, August 25, 7 p.m. showing in the Storer Ballroom, free admission
Tuesday, August 26, 7 p.m. showing in the Storer Ballroom, free admission
Friday, August 29, 7 p.m., Reynolds Hall, co-sponsored with the Shepherdstown Film Society, free admission.

Persepolis Persian Dinner:

Wednesday, October 8, Persian buffet dinner with live Middle Eastern music and
bellydancing by TarabRaqs (http://tarabraqs.com/), free to meal plan participants with Rambler ID and $7 /person for adults and $3 for children under 7 years of age.  Faculty, staff, and general public are invited and are encouraged to attend.

Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Legislative Studies, Mary Strasma and Dr. David Gordon will speak on “Iran:  A Short Introduction to a Long History,” the history of Iran.  Open to students and the general public.  Free

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Legislative Studies, Dr. J. Kristen Urban, Associate Professor of Political Science, Mt. St. Mary’s University, Emmitsburg, MD, will speak on the politics of modern Iran, “Politics & Perceptions in Persepolis.”  Free.

Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Legislative Studies, Monica Larson will speak on the “Graphic Novels: Not Just for Kids Anymore.”  Open to students and the general public.  Free.

Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Legislative Studies, Imam Yahya Hendi, noted Muslim cleric and chaplain will speak on a variety of subjects including being Muslim in Iran and the commonalities and differences between Islam, Christianity and Judaism.  Open to students and the general public.  Free.

Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Legislative Studies, Dr. Mina Marefat of Washington, D.C. will speak on the culture and architecture of Iran.  Open to students and the general public.  Free.

Persepolis trip to the Freer and Sackler Galleries, Washington, D.C.:

Thursday, April 16, 2009, leaving Shepherd at 9 a.m.  Persepolis trip to the Freer and Sackler Galleries, Washington, D.C.:  Persian/Iranian art treasurers will be featured in this guided tour of the East Asian Collection at the Freer and Sackler Galleries.  Transportation will be by Gateway bus.   Free.

Musical performances:

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 7 p.m..  Raya Bahrami Santur Concert, Reynolds Hall. Free Admission.

Displays on campus:

March 16 - 24, 2009, Persian New Year exhibit, Scarborough Library.

Student Essay Contest:

November 19, 2008, Persepolis essays due.  Submit to Campus Center Information Desk by 5 p.m.  First prize is a $250 gift certificate to the Shepherd University Bookstore.  Other prizes are yet to be determined.  For more information on the contest see the Student Information link on the Home Page of the Common Reading website.
