Academics: Co-Curricular Activities
WSHC, 89.7 FM
Shepherd University is home to WSHC, a 950-watt radio station that is housed on the ground floor of Knutti Hall. The station is an alternative format and plays a mix of news, sports, music and talk radio. We are enhancing our day-to-day programming and equipment to help our DJ's play and create the most modern sounds available, as well as increase our cultural diversity with poetry, recitals, and news.
Students from across the University are encouraged to participate. They interact with local artists, politicians and community members to generate on-air content.
Radio Practicum (COMM 326) is a class offered every semester that introduces students to the station. Enrolled students get hands-on experience by performing different tasks that relate to their job. The class jobs include:
- Record Label Representative
- Assistant Music Director
- SGA Representative
- Event Coordinator
- PSA Coordinator
- Production Staff
- News Staff
Intercollegiate Forensics (COMM 331) is a course which insists that competition accelerates rhetorical competencies in debate and individual events. In the former, students compete against teams from other colleges by debating topics which have been chosen at the national level. In the latter, students display their understanding of literary texts as well as current events by competing against other students in faculty-judged circumstances. In both debate and individual events, overnight travel is likely. The course may be repeated.
