SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Common Reading Program, with support from the Shepherd University Foundation, is sponsoring a forum titled “Technological Advancements in Healthcare” on Tuesday, March 8, at 6 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium (formerly the Byrd Center for Legislative Studies). The event is free and open to the public.
In the current common reading, “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other,” author Sherry Turkle highlights the role robots and digital devices increasingly play in childcare, eldercare, and general healthcare. In keeping with the theme from the book, during the panel discussion four expert panelists will explore topics like virtual doctor visits, apps and wearable technology devices, robot-assisted surgery, genomic technology, and strategic planning in public health.
Panelists include Dr. Guru Madhavan, a biomedical engineer, senior policy advisor, and researcher at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Konrad Nau, Dean of West Virginia University School of Medicine Eastern Division and CEO for University Healthcare Physicians; Dr. Stacey Kendig, chair of the Shepherd’s Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Studies; and Dr. Laura Clayton, professor of nursing education. Dr. Heidi Dobish, associate professor of psychology and co-chair of the Department of Psychology, will moderate the discussion.
