Shepherdstown, WV--Dr. Sylvia Bailey
Shurbutt, project director of the Appalachian Heritage Writer-in-Residence
Project and the West Virginia Young Writer's Fiction Competition at Shepherd
University, received a $2,500 research fellowship from the West Virginia
Humanities Council for the study "Voices from the Misty Mountains: Talking
from the Fringe."
This critical study will explore the uniquely southern and
Appalachian themes and narrative styles in the poetry and prose of
Shepherd's Appalachian Heritage Writers-in-Residence from the past five
years including Sharyn McCrumb from Virginia; Marilou Awiakta from
Tennessee; Denise Giardina from West Virginia; Robert Morgan from North
Carolina; and the 2004 Appalachian Writer-in-Residence, Fred Chappell from
North Carolina. Each of these five writers has made a unique contribution to
enhance an understanding of Appalachian traditions and values.
