Shepherdstown, WV--The Shepherd College Foundation announces the creation of a scholarship to honor John Douglas and Elizabeth Snyder Lowe.

The endowed scholarship is funded through a gift made by Elizabeth Snyder Lowe in memory of her husband who died in 2002. The scholarship will fund the John D. Lowe Award to be given to a junior or senior member of the Shepherd College Golf team and the Betty Snyder Lowe Award to be given to a junior or senior who is minoring in historic preservation or majoring in history or history education.

John Douglas Lowe was the founder and president of Lowe Products, a family mulch business in Shepherdstown. He was a 1953 graduate of Shepherd College. After serving in the Army as a cryptography instructor, he taught at Martinsburg High School for four years and South Hagerstown High School for one year. He worked in several area businesses including State Farm Insurance and O'Boyle Tank Line. After constructing mulch plants for Martinsburg Veneer Company and Plumley Lumber Company, Winchester, he began his own mulch business and served as its president for 20 years. He also served on the board of directors for Jefferson Security Bank and was one of the trustees for the Rumsey Monument Park in Shepherdstown. He was involved in many community volunteer agencies and was an avid golfer, setting eight course records at Cress Creek Country Club and patenting a special golf club called the Puttru Roller.

Elizabeth Snyder Lowe, a lifelong resident of Shepherdstown, has made many contributions to the civic, social, educational, and religious life of the community. She was given the Outstanding Alumna Award for Shepherdstown High School in 1996. Her work in the field of historic preservation and genealogy earned her the title of "History Hero" by the State of West Virginia on History Day 2003. She has published three genealogy books on her family as well as a history of Jefferson Security Bank. She assisted in the publication of Shepherdstown III, a history of Shepherdstown.

She is currently a member of the Board of the Jefferson County Historical Society, the Elmwood Cemetery Board, and the Shepherd College Alumni Association Board. She is a member and registrar of the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and historian of her chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
