SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University will commemorate International Education Week and Geography Awareness Week by hosting a special presentation featuring Martinsburg plastic surgeon Dr. J. Richard Casuccio titled “Doctors Overseas, Transforming Lives.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place Monday, November 13, at 7 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History auditorium.
Casuccio’s presentation will focus on his work with Doctors Overseas Lending a Helping Hand, a nonprofit organization Casuccio founded. Based in Loudoun County, Virginia, it provides medical assistance to people in needy areas of the world. Casuccio has done surgeries in many countries over several decades. He worked most recently with other American medical personnel at the Hospital Regional De Loreto in Iquitos, Peru, performing general and plastic surgeries literally in the jungle. His wife, Michelle, provides logistical and patient assistance on these medical trips. His wife and several medical personnel will participate in the evening’s presentation.
Casuccio was on the faculty of the George Washington University School of Medicine for 18 years and has been an assistant professor of surgery (plastic surgery) with the WVU School of Medicine in Martinsburg since 2008.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Phi Beta Delta Honor for International Scholars, the Global Studies Program, the Department of Sociology and Geography, and the Shepherdstown Rotary Club are sponsoring Casuccio’s presentation.
