SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s College of Business is sponsoring a new seminar and networking series that will feature internationally known experts in knowledge management, innovation, and data analytics.

“At Shepherd we’re looking at innovation, problem solving, creativity, and entrepreneurship as foundational themes for our students,” said Dr. Ben Martz, College of Business dean. “One goal for this seminar series is to get the students and the community thinking about how one discipline interacts with another.”

Each seminar is free and open to the public and will take place on a Tuesday afternoon from 4:30-5:30 p.m. followed by hors d’oeuvres and networking sponsored by the Shepherd University President’s Club.

The first seminar, “Intuition + Analytics = Innovation,” will take place on Tuesday, September 12, in the Erma Ora Byrd auditorium and will feature Dr. Jay Liebowitz, distinguished chair of applied business and finance at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania. Liebowitz will discuss how intuition has often been downplayed in today’s era of big data and analytics. However, recent studies have shown that intuition continues to play a key part in executive decision making and has shown to be a necessary component for at least the front-end process of innovation. This presentation will highlight intuition-based decision making and its role in analytics and innovation.

The second seminar, “Trust, Knowledge Management, and Innovation,” is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10, in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium and will feature Dr. Joanna Paliszkiewicz, professor of economic sciences at Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Poland. Paliszkiewicz will talk about the fact that knowledge and trust are crucial to an organization’s ability to operate, learn, and grow. The purpose of this presentation is to show how trust, knowledge management, and innovation are intertwined and to discuss how to build a high-trust organization where employees can share knowledge and create or innovate.

The final seminar, “Business Process Mining for Innovation,” by Dr. Jan Vanthienen, chaired professor in the Department of Decision Sciences and Information Management at the University of Leuven, Belgium, will take place Tuesday, November 14, in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education auditorium. The abundance of data and the rise of new quantitative and statistical techniques have made the area of data analytics a promising field with new and innovative forms of data-driven decision making. The applications are already infiltrating numerous business areas such as marketing, finance, human resources, and quality assurance. This seminar will explore how data can be used to evaluate efficiency, assess compliance, improve processes, analyze and model the underlying knowledge, and lead to a new set of analyses to drive innovations for the digital enterprise.
