The History of the Shindler Family
Local historian, Jim Surkamp of Shepherdstown, WV, produced and shared with the George Tyler Moore Center a fantastic two-part video telling the story of the Shindler family. The videos relate the story of the Shindlers through the eyes of Mary Shindler, daughter of Conrad and Elizabeth Shindler. To watch both videos, follow the links below.
In 1815, Conrad Shindler purchased the property and home that now houses the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War. While we have uncovered some history about one of Shepherdstown’s prominent 19th century coppersmiths, not much is known about his wife, Elizabeth.
Recent Shepherd University graduate and history major in the Civil War/Nineteenth Century America concentration, Melanie Garvey, dove into the past and uncovered some information to shed some light on Elizabeth Shindler.
