Business and Social Sciences

Welcome to the School of Business and Social Sciences (BASS), home to more than twenty major and minor programs, and absolutely central to the undergraduate experience! Housed primarily in White Hall on East Campus, our school is comprised of seven dynamic departments, i.e., Accounting, Business Administration and Family and Consumer Sciences, Economics and Finance, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and Geography, and Social Work, the latter a state-designated “program of distinction.” The Social Work and Business Administration programs are both nationally accredited. These seven departments offer an abundance of focus areas such as International Studies, Criminology, Legal Studies, Anthropology, Geography, Aging Studies, Nutrition, Financial Economics, Marketing, Management, Financial Planning, and Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development. Together we provide high quality undergraduate education in the liberal arts and professional programs, and link into Shepherd’s graduate programs in Business Administration and College Student Development and Administration.

Our programs emphasize student engagement and high-impact practices aimed at preparing you for the work world as, for example, internships in political science, service projects in sociology, field experiences in social work, faculty-led research in psychology, study tours to Europe and Asia, and teamwork in the business plan competitions.  Our Political Science Department is home base for Model United Nations and Forensics and Debate.  Check out RamPulse for info on our student clubs and organizations.  Our faculty takes pride in teaching excellence and personalized one-on-one advising and mentoring. No teaching assistants, but fully qualified professors to guide you into meaningful careers, from government service to teaching, counseling, and management.

I am privileged to interact on a daily basis with many multitalented people…students, staff, and faculty, and I am both energized by and proud of their many scholarly and creative achievements. Faculty expertise is impressive and runs the gamut from consumer economics to tax policy, business law, juvenile delinquency, archaeology, and Middle Eastern politics. Many of the faculty are published in prestigious journals and some engage students directly in their research. For a closer look, click here to visit the departments’ websites.

We invite you to explore Shepherd University, this treasure on the Potomac, a “gateway to the world of opportunities and ideas.” If you think it’s a good fit, then come, immerse and enrich yourself, and share in the exciting and transforming “Shepherd experience.” As the famous animator Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it!”

A warm welcome on behalf of the School of Business and Social Sciences.
