UNIVERSITY STATUS AND NAME CHANGE
The College President has led the campus in an extended discussion of the prospect of seeking university status and a name change reflecting this status. This change has been endorsed by the faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
The HEPC has established specific criteria for university status:
1) Offer at least one master's program (Attached is selected portions of the new Graduate catalog reflecting the program which began in August 2003.);
2) Have approved Mission Statement which provides for graduate programs (The current Mission Statement is attached.);
3) Obtain approval of North Central Association Higher Learning Commission for a master's program (Certificate of Commission attached);
4) Non-CTC faculty in which at least 2/3 of tenured and tenure-track faculty hold terminal degree (List of faculty, establishing 81% terminal degrees, attached).
The following resolution is recommended for adoption by the Board:
RESOLVED, That the Shepherd College Board of Governors finds that Shepherd College meets each of the Criteria for Designation of University Status approved by the Higher Education Policy Commission on February 15, 2002; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Shepherd College Board of Governors directs the President to request of the Higher Education Policy Commission its designation of university status for Shepherd College and its support for Legislative action sufficient and necessary to change the name of Shepherd College to Shepherd University; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Shepherd College Board of Governors directs the President to take such further action as may seem necessary and prudent to obtain Legislative approval of a change of name for the institution to Shepherd University.
